An image of a Harper graduate wearing their cap and gown, in the starting position on a track, was the inspiration behind the design of this year's community report. Comparing our values and equity to a track (race) helped me illustrate this concept while tying in the theme “Forward Together.”
In a track race, athletes are assigned starting positions based on their past performance or a random draw.
Similarly, in our community, individuals are born into different circumstances that can affect their
opportunities and resources. There may be obstacles or curves that can slow them down, just as in the
community, individuals face different obstacles such as discrimination or lack of access to education that
can hinder their progress. The finish line represents the goal that all athletes strive to reach and similarily,
equity in our community means that all individuals should have equal opportunities to reach their full
potential and succeed. Athletes often have coaches, trainers, and teammates who support them and help
them overcome obstacles. Similarily, Harper and its resources can help individuals achieve their goals.
Having these geometric lane elements in the community report symbolizes Harper’s forward movement
and progress toward strategic goals. With this in mind, I wanted the design elements to carry this
messaging across the report in a subtle yet interesting way to further support the messaging.
